Dear All,
I think the use of contemporary texts, meaning using popular culture texts such as TV series can be fun and challenging. Students are exposed to lots of lots of texts including modern ones. There are a lot of alternatives: song lyrics, TV series reviews' etc.
I tried to use a review of Korean TV series, "Princess Hours" (broadcasted by Indosiar) in one of the classes. To me. using popular films' reviews can be motivating and good alternatives in learning Literature. It does not matter whether the movies are Korean, Japanese (for example manga), even Kung Fu. For all these years, we're always exposed to Western Literature. Why not make use of modern texts around us. I believe that using those texts will be more interesting. Don't you think so?

In term of having the nature of communication and fun learning where the target language is used, using some texts (or i might say it as genre) is really motivating and would suggest fun and nice learning atmosphere.
The other practical use of english spoken by other people (out of the english speaking country) could also be seen easy for our students to catch out the meaning delivered in their communication. in this regard, the use of Korean film, japanese or other similar movies might be storngly beneficial for the target language learning.
However, such use does not seem to provide the real context of the target language and its cultural interference as well. the use of english is some asian film is keenly affected to the culture of asian people whereas some language contexts might be absent and some meanings seem to be misunderstood.
